Post Herpetic Neuralgia

One of the painful conditions that can occur as you get older is to have a difficulty with shingles. This problem is associated with the same virus that causes chickenpox, but it is more common for an individual in their older years to have shingles. In fact, the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles is always in the body and once you have been infected, you are infected for life.

One of the problems that may be associated with shingles is a condition that is known as post herpetic neuralgia. The pain that is associated can be quite severe and it is often described as a shooting pain that is associated with the nerve that is being affected. Other people feel the discomfort as a burning pain or a stabbing pain.

A problem with post prophetic neuralgia is typically diagnosed if you continue to have painful symptoms after the shingles should have come and gone. In most cases, shingles clear up within 2-4 weeks but if you continue to have pain after that time, it may be a problem with this condition.
