Neck Pain

A problem with neck pain often involves the soft tissues in the area, including the muscles, ligaments and tendons. One of the most common reasons why neck pain occurs is because of whiplash. Whiplash takes place when the neck is suddenly moved quickly and it strains the soft tissues in the area because of the extension that takes place. It is a common issue with car accidents.

What Are the Symptoms and Diagnosis of Neck Pain?

The most common symptom of neck pain is the pain itself that you are experiencing but it may also result in a degree of neck stiffness, due to the injury to the soft tissues in the area. Additional symptoms may also include dizziness, headaches, tingling and burning. The pain may also radiate to other areas of the body, including the back and shoulders. Less common symptoms may include psychological issues and disruptions in your somatic or cognitive abilities. The pain may also result in depression, fatigue and it can interrupt your sleep. Although the pain may occur suddenly when the injury takes place, there may also be a delay before it is experienced.

How Is Neck Pain Treated?

Each individual case is different and unique, so your doctor will need to diagnose you before a treatment is provided. At times, some over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs or a prescription, if necessary, may help to reduce the inflammation in the area and the pain. Muscle relaxants and antidepressants may also be prescribed in some cases. Some individuals benefit from the use of a cervical collar, which helps to restrict the range of motion and allow the area to heal. Hot and cold treatments, along with physical therapy may also be the best course of action, depending upon your condition.
